Respite care is short-term support used as a temporary alternative to a person's usual care arrangements. People who care a for a family member with an illness or disability often carry on without realizing how tired or stressed they have become. It is important that carers have regular breaks and make time for their own needs. A short term live in carer (up to 24 hours) can help them relax and recharge their batteries.

Many people who care for someone feel worried or guilty about taking a break and leaving the person they are caring for, even for a short period. It is important to remember that if a carer stretches themselves too far and becomes ill or depressed, life may become more difficult both for them and for the person being cared for. Carers are entitled to have time to themselves, to rest and to do the things they want to do.

'Respite care - having someone else look after their loved one, even for a few hours each week - is essential in reducing caregiver stress, a major contributing factor in elder abuse. Every caregiver needs time alone, free from the worry and responsibility of looking after someone else's needs..' APA, 2011
